The chicken is a common domesticated fowl that is commercially valued for meat, eggs, and feathers. Domestic chickens are descended from the wild red jungle fowl that is native to Southeast Asia, and is believed to have been domesticated as far back as 8,000 years ago. Chickens have large heavy bodies and short wings that are generally incapable of flying except for brief distances. Their feet are usually four-toed and designed to scratch the earth where they can find natural foods such as worms, insects, seeds, and vegetation. Adults of both sexes have a naked fleshy crest called a comb atop their heads and are usually more prominent in males. Both males and females also grow a dewlap, a loose fold of skin that hangs from the throat and is commonly known as a wattle. Plumage varies in color and ranges from white and gray to yellow, red, brown, and black.
