The Lung is a Site of Platelet Biogenesis and a Reservoir for Haematopoietic Progenitors

Researchers at UCSF have provided the first direct evidence for substantial platelet biogenesis in the lungs in a new article published in Nature. A Nikon A1R MP multiphoton microscope was used to visualize lung microcirculation in mice, showing large numbers of megakaryocytes dynamically releasing platelets. Approximately half of platelet production was found to occur in the lungs in their model.
