Images of specimens entered into the 2009 Small World contest included microorganisms, plant tissues, fish scales, fibers, chemical crystals, soap bubbles, integrated circuits, liquid crystals, animal cells in culture, insects, and snowflakes. Judges for the 35th annual contest were Gary Borisy (Marine Biological Laboratory), Charles Krebs (Charles Krebs Photography), James Shreeve (National Geographic), and journalist Clive Thompson.
