- Z stack
- A collection of images taken at different depths in a specimen, typically used to observe three dimensional structures. Various three-dimensional rendering techniques can be applied to Z stacks (e.g., maximum intensity projection). Z stacks can also be subjected to iterative 3D deconvolution for improvement.

- To change the focal length and magnification of the optical system while not changing the position of the object plane or image planes through translation of a single lens along the optical axis between defined positions.
